Thomas Jefferson(1743-1826),the third
President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. A member of the
second Continental Congress, Jefferson drafted the Declaration of
Independence in 1776. Jefferson's presidency was marked by the purchase
of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803. As president, Jefferson
strengthened the powers of the executive branch of government. During
Jefferson's lifetime he sought to develop a government that would best
assure the freedom and well-being of the individual. A political
philosopher, educator, and architect, Jefferson designed his own
estate, Monticello.
Monticello, residence and estate of Thomas Jefferson, located in
Albemarle County, Virginia. Begun in 1770 the building was completed in
1809. It was completely designed by Jefferson in a complex
architectural style. The 35-room house is made of red brick, trimmed
with white wood; it has a Greek portico and is capped by a Roman style
dome.
